L’ARCHIPEL DES FORCATS
Nouvelle Calédonie – 2009 – 90 mn
Réalisateur : Jacques-Olivier Trompas
Production : Néo Productions
Version française sous-titrée en anglais
Less famous than its Guyanese counterpart, the New Caledonian penal colony represents another story of the French ultramarine prison. The taking over of this French South Pacific land in 1853 marked the beginning of this colonization through prison. 22,000 ‘transported’ people arrived in successive waves in New Caledonia from 1864. The penal colony closed its doors in 1931. Through the lives of four of these men, this film offers a vision of this period through the historical facts and the ‘stories’ of men who got through it.
