Bee King's parents were Aboriginal. She was adopted by a white family during the era in Australia's history when it was still government policy to 'assimilate' Indigenous Australians into the white society. She was always puzzled by the contrast between her dark skin, and the paleness of the rest of the family. Bee's attempts as a teenager collapsed when her mother rejected her. However, her courage and persistence led her finally to make a connection that would open a whole new world of family and acceptance to her.
